The McNay Art Museum’s Head of Christ, part of Marion Koogler McNay’s founding collection, has for many years been considered a studio version or later copy of a painting by El Greco (Doménikos Theotokopoulos, 1541–1614). Recent conservation treatment has revealed the painting’s quality while scholarly research confirms the work is largely by El Greco himself, and appears to be related to The Disrobing of Christ altarpiece in the cathedral of Toledo, Spain. The conservation process and comparison with other versions attributed to El Greco are the focus of the exhibition.
